Mad Dog “A Series” ATAK #A789 with ATAK Sheath

Mad Dog “A Series” ATAK #A789 with ATAK Sheath. The Mad Dog “A Series” SEAL ATAK’s are some of the most sought after Mad Dog knives around, and for good reason. These knives had all the desired Mad Dog® Knife features like the file worked spine, false edges, laser engraved markings with serial numbers, matching numbered sheaths and beautifully finished black KalGard over hard chrome blades. Some older Mad Dog Knives like this particular one had “Asymmetrical  Handles” where the main part of the handle was actually made from a single piece of 3/4″ thick composite that was rabbited in from one side instead of the standard evenly matched 3/8″ thick slabs like on the newer models. The A series ATAK’s started with serial #A500 and ended at #A1000, so 500 total A Series ATAKs were produced, #A789 was the 289th A series ATAK made. This knife is a great example of Mad Dog@ Knives history and fortunately the collector who purchased this one kept in in superb condition.

Mad Dog “C Series” ATAK #C168 with ATAK Sheath

Mad Dog “C Series” ATAK #C168 with ATAK Sheath. Approximately 200 “C Series” ATAKs were produced in 1994 starting at serial # C100- C300. About half of the C Series ATAK’s had black blades (Kalgard over hard chrome) & the other half had standard chrome blades. Some of these knives had various special logos like the “Columbian Presidential Seal” & others were simply marked with  ”CXXX”.

Mad Dog quote:  ”The C series were ordered by the US State Dept. for shipment to the US Embassy in Colombia, where they were subsequently distributed to the Colombian Presidential Guard and some Colombian SF Operatives involved in narcotics interdiction and counterinsurgency. Evidently some few of them were retained by Embassy staffers there, a few of which have made it back to the States and subsequently into the aftermarket.”

C Series ATAK’s are extremely rare and you hardly ever see one for sale. This C Series ATAK is in absolute mint condition and looks as good as the day it was made.

Mad Dog DSU 2 Sterile with ATAK Sheath

The Mad Dog DSU 2 was originally commissioned by Lt. Commander Daniel Kerns (RIP) of the US Navy Deep Submergence Unit. The Navy DSU was in need of a knife that would be able to cut various sizes of extremely abrasive ropes like Spectra and Kevlar in quick fashion along with being able to handle extreme depths (12,000′ +) without blowing apart. Mad Dog quickly answered this problem with a fully serrated variant of the hugely successful Mad Dog SEAL ATAK. The DSU and DSU 2 were designed and developed in early 1993 and approximately 200 of these older DSU 2 knives were made over the next couple of years. Most of the original DSU 2 knives were sold to the Navy DSU, commercial and sport divers along with other various specialized people. A DSU 2 knife was actually credited by Lt. Commander Daniel Kerns with saving a Naval support ship from sinking. Armed with his Mad Dog DSU 2, Lt. Commander Kerns cut loose an out of control piece of heavy equipment in class 5 seas held by a piece of 2″ Spectra in a single swipe. The DSU 2 is extremely effective for what it was designed for. This Mad Dog DSU 2 was made “Sterile” or “No Return Address”, so there are no markings on the knife what so ever. Sterile Mad Dog® Knives are far and few between and this one is in mint condition.

Mad Dog “D Series” ATAK 2 Serial # D26 with ATAK Sheath

Mad Dog “D Series” ATAK 2-Serial # D26. The “D Series” ATAK’s were a mixture of ATAK & ATAK 2 knives, the exact amount of how many were actually produced is undetermined, but Mad Dog guesses that it was less than 100 total pieces. D series ATAK/ATAK 2′s were produced in approximately 1994. The D series ATAKs were marked with the letter “D” followed by the appropriate serial number on the spine of the blade. This particular knife does not have the matching sheath, the sheath with this knife is marked “D33″ which would go with the “D33″ ATAK. The original owner acquired both the D26 and D33 ATAK”s and ended up mistakenly switching the sheaths a long time ago. Unfortunately the sale of the D33 happen many years ago and the original D26 sheath cannot be recovered. I have tried the D26 knife in the D33 sheath and it is a perfect fit, other than the markings, one would never know it was not original. The sheath has a Spyderco 1″ X 2.4″ medium brown ceramic stone glued to the back of the sheath along with a fire starter-all wrapped in black para-cord, this is all original and was done by Mad Dog himself. This knife has never been used and is in mint condition, it would be an excellent addition to any Mad Dog collection. This knife will come with a Maxpedition R-14 zippered soft case. When was the last time you have seen a “D Series” ATAK/ATAK 2 for sale?
